Zangief is aRussian wrestler known as 'The Red Cyclone'. He impressed the president of the (then) USSR, Gorbachev, so much thathe was hired by the government and soon became a national hero. Under ordersfrom Gorbachev, Zangief was sent to combat the forces of Shadaloo, which isbeginning to spread its corruption into Russia. Zangief encountered manyfighters along the way, and ended up befriending a few of them, such as E.Honda andR. Mika.
After he was defeated in the second World Warrior Tournament, he returned totraining in the Russian wilderness, wrestling bears. Eventually, he wasapproached by the largest wrestling organization in the world with an eye tosigning the 'Red Cyclone' to their promotion. Zangief declined atfirst, and said that he is less interested in money than he is in bringing honorto Russia by demonstrating Russian strength. He is promised a stage to bettershowcase his skills, with his matches watched by millions. Due to the obvioushelp this will bring to his will to show Russian strength, Zangief accepted.Years later, Zangief entered the World Tournament held by S.I.N. to prove to hisyoung fans (some of whom are beginning to claim that martial artists are better)that he's still got it.

Zangief is theoriginal pro-wrestler / powerhouse of the Street Fighter series and he single-handedly made the spinningpiledriver a legendary pro wrestling move. He also put '360 throws' onthe fighting game map. The Gief started off as a fairly plain-looking yetmemorable character design,but he was greatly fleshed out in later games. Along with getting some cool newmoves, Gief even became somewhat of a comicrelief character for the series (in addition to being a 300+ lb. freak who cansmash your skull in... so you better take him seriously). :)
Even though he's a funny guy, Gief managed to retain his coolnessand intimidation-factor over the years, and he's only gotten biggerand badder with each Street Fighter sequel he appeared in. I personally think he should wear his badassred cape more often... it's a really cool part of his design and prettyunderused. Anyhow, Street Fighter just wouldn't be the same withoutZangief.
